This is a 1:1 Minecraft build of the German Battleship Bismarck, the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. The ship had a short service career compared to her sister, Tirpitz, but her
Bismarck was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in July 1936 and launched in February 1939. She was completed in August 1940 and commissioned into the fleet on 24 August 1940. Bismarck and her sister Tirpitz would be the biggest battleships constructed by Germany, and two of the largest built by a European power.
The ship's eight-month-long career would start with sea trials in the Baltic sea, running her machinery at full power and test-firing her guns. On the 6th of March, Bismarck received the order to steam to Kiel. At 08:45 on 8 March, Bismarck briefly ran aground on the southern shore of the Kiel Canal; she was freed within an hour. The ship reached Kiel the following day, where her crew stocked ammunition, fuel, and other supplies and applied a coat of dazzle paint to camouflage her, giving Bismarck its iconic black and white stripe camouflage. She underwent combat readiness training to prepare for the upcoming sortie into the Atlantic to raid commerce, Operation Rheinübung.
On the 18th of May 1941, Bismarck participated in Operation Rheinübung, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. The ships made it to the Denmark Strait before encountering British surface forces, consisting of the battlecruiser HMS Hood and the newly commissioned battleship HMS Prince of Wales. Bismarck's accuracy was excellent during what would be known as the Battle of the Denmark Strait, scoring a fatal hit on Hood on her 5th salvo, which detonated Hood's 15-inch cordite magazines, and sending the ship under in three minutes. After Hood's sinking, the Royal Navy hunted Bismarck down, as it attempted to make it back to Occupied France, but British forces soon caught up to Bismarck on the 27th of May and began to take hits. Bismarck's inability to maneuver made her a sitting duck, as her fighting capability was slowly deteriorating as British shells and torpedoes slammed into her. A total of 2800 shells were fired at Bismarck, most at point-blank range, but she refused to sink. At around 10:20, Bismarck was scuttled, capsizing slowly and sinking at 10:40. Out of 2,200 crew, only 114 survived.
In Minecraft, this is the first German ship that I've constructed, and although I finished it 7 months ago, I decided the create all the different paint schemes that Bismarck had too. I then redid the lower hull, changed the propeller design, and made minor changes to the ship. The map I included has all the paint schemes that I've shown, one without paint, one before and during Operation Rheinübung, and a final paint scheme that existed according to some accounts, with all the turrets painted yellow.
